Tiandra is a remote worker and writer from Illinois. She made the bold move to Uruguay without a job in 2017 and eventually found herself living here solo. Today, she lives in Montevideo’s Old City, works remotely, and says living in Uruguay brings her peace, purpose and freedom. In this episode of Living in Uruguay (as a foreigner), Karen A Higgs, founder of @GuruGuay, speaks with Tiandra about what it’s really like to be living in Uruguay. As a single woman and Black expat, she shares the highs and lows - from affordable rent and a strong sense of community to job instability and navigating the system in Spanish. We explore: Why she chose Uruguay How she found remote work without a job offer What she earns and spends living in Uruguay Life as a single woman abroad Making friends and building community Her experience as a Black woman living in Uruguay And what surprised her - both good and bad - about living in Uruguay In our rapid fire round, Tiandra shares her thoughts on: Life in Uruguay is… The cost of living… Before I moved here, I wish I had known… The biggest difference between my life before and now… If you’re curious about living in Uruguay, especially as a solo expat, this is an honest, practical and inspiring interview you won’t want to miss.
