More than 24 hours after polls closed in Honduras’s three-way presidential election, there was not an official winner yet. But there was a clear loser: pro-Beijing candidate Rixi Moncada of the ruling Libre (Freedom) Party, who was a distant third behind pro-Taipei candidates Nasry Asfura of the National Party and Salvador Nasralla of the Liberal Party. The dismal result comes only two years after Honduras switched its diplomatic ties from Taiwan and China for the promise of more economic investment and a larger export market, only to see those opportunities quickly evaporate. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump also weighed in on the election by endorsing the National Party candidate, possibly swaying the result in his favor.
