OB Commits to Long Term Disaster Relief in Turkey

Here in Antakya, widespread damage has forced families to seek refuge elsewhere. Those who've stayed behind must rely on the generosity of others across the globe. OB's Benjamin Brittain said, “The reality is, these people still have no homes. Many of them have no jobs because their businesses collapsed. So the effect is not only just that people have lost their homes, but they now have no means to even provide for their families." One resident shared, “There were four of us in the room, my husband and I and our children. My husband died, and so did my son.” Trapped under the rubble for more than 130 hours, she is miraculously alive to tell her story of survival and face the reality of loss. She continued, “I need a helper and a home. I have nothing with no son alive to work. I have nothing. I need help.” Another resident told us, “We need electricity, water, a bathroom, and kitchen." She recalled running out of her home, being unable to stand, and holding her family for what she thought was the last time. She went on, overcome with emotion. “If I explained the story, I will cry. It was like the apocalypse.” Before receiving temporary housing, her family survived in a pigeon coop with roughly ten others lighting fires to keep warm. Now it serves as their washroom since their home is too dangerous to enter. Operation Blessing arrived shortly after the first earthquake hit in February. The plan is to stay for at least six months to love and help the people of Turkey any way we can. Ben said, “Our major stock is in food boxes that contain your basic commodities of rice, oil, beans, flour, sugar. But we're also starting to hopefully purchase bulk items as well as we have hygiene kits." Our team knows disaster relief is often short-lived because stories often disappear quickly from the news cycle. That's why Operation Blessing is here for the long haul. He said, "The need is astronomical. I've never seen anything like it. And to think that even us being here for six months means we will likely be one of the few at that point where we're really having an impact.
