How Long Do DMV Points Stay on Your Colorado Driver’s License? | Attorney Explains In this educational video, Colorado criminal defense attorney Michael Becker of the Colorado Legal Defense Group explains how DMV points work in Colorado and how long they stay on your driving record. While points from traffic violations remain on your license permanently, the Colorado DMV only considers points from the past two years when deciding whether to suspend your license. Your “complete” driving record goes back seven years and includes all points from traffic infractions and misdemeanors. This full record may be reviewed by employers or insurance companies when evaluating your driving history. Michael Becker also breaks down the different point thresholds based on a driver’s age. Adults 21 and older can accumulate up to 11 points in one year or 17 points in two years before risking suspension. Drivers aged 18 to 20 are limited to 8 points in one year, 11 in two years, or 13 points during the three-year young adult period. For minors under 18, the limits are even stricter—5 points in one year or 6 total before suspension. Exceeding these limits can result in a license suspension lasting 6 to 12 months. However, many drivers may qualify for a probationary license to drive to work or school, and up to 3 points can be removed by completing a court-approved traffic school.
