Online Gaming Bill Cleared: Government Bans Real Money Betting Apps | India Today News

The Union Cabinet has cleared the online gaming bill, a move to curb fraud, addiction, and loopholes in the booming gaming sector. Once implemented, the bill will ban all cash-based transactions for online betting. Banks cannot transfer funds for such activities, and flashy advertisements for real money applications will also be blocked. Esports and skill-based games will continue to receive a green signal. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will serve as the central referee. This tough stance follows a series of tragic incidents. In Hyderabad this year, a postal worker died by suicide due to 50 lakh rupee in betting debts. In Karnataka, at least 18 suicides over the past three years have been linked to online gaming losses. A family of three in Mysuru ended their lives after losing 80 lakh rupees to gaming debts.
