Visit the Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine (Oklahoma City) — Museum, Grotto, Church with Music

I visited the Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine in Oklahoma City on December 7, 2024 during the celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This short tour begins with the walk up the Tepeyac-style grotto where musicians were playing for Our Lady, moves through parts of the shrine museum, and ends with a quiet walk through the church toward the altar and Father Rother’s tomb. Father Stanley Rother was born in Okarche, Oklahoma, and served as a missionary priest in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala. He stayed with his people through danger and was martyred in 1981; he was beatified in 2017 and is honored each year on July 28, the anniversary of his martyrdom. The shrine complex was dedicated on February 17, 2023 and is designed in a Spanish-colonial style with a large sanctuary for pilgrims. The shrine sits on land the Archdiocese purchased that formerly housed a nine-hole golf course; the campus includes a 6,000-square-foot pilgrim/museum center, a museum and gift shop, a pilgrim center, a re-creation of Tepeyac Hill topped by statues of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego, and the chapel that now contains Father Rother’s remains.
