Hear from experienced pasture scientists Kendrick Cox and Craig Lemin, Department of Primary Industries, Queensland, together with pastoralist Kelvin Bethel from Georgetown and Senior agronomist Stan Paynter from Selected Seeds as they explain the benefits of over-sowing stylo and other legumes (Desmanthus, Butterfly Pea) into native pastures. Stylos are commonly known by the variety names; Seca (shrubby stylo), Verano (Caribbean stylo) and Caatinga. They are the most widely sown and naturalised pasture legumes in northern Australia. When oversown into native pastures on lighter textured soils they can dramatically improve the feed quality especially over the dry season where cattle in northern Australia typically lose weight. This is an initiative of the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s ‘3.2 Over-sowing legumes’ project supported by the Northern Hub through funding from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund in collaboration with the Queensland Department of Primary Industries ‘North Queensland Pasture Resilience Program’.
