A final-year civil engineering student of IIT Kharagpur, Mohammed Asif, tragically ended his life in his hostel room at Madanmohan Malviya Hall. Mohammed Asif was from a village named Garahia in the Sheohar district of Bihar. His bags were found packed, and he was reportedly preparing to return home the same day. According to police reports, his room was locked from the inside. A call received by the IIT Kharagpur campus office from an unidentified woman prompted staff to alert the authorities. It is believed that the student spoke to this unknown caller, who claimed to be from Delhi, shortly before taking his own life. As of now, the caller has not been identified, and the investigation is ongoing. This marks the third suicide at IIT Kharagpur this year alone. In April, a fourth-year student died by suicide, and earlier in January, a third-year undergraduate took the same tragic step. These repeated incidents reflect a growing crisis in student mental health and the intense pressure students face after entering prestigious institutions like IITs. Every year, lakhs of students in India dedicate years of their life, studying day and night, preparing for competitive exams like JEE and NEET. Cracking these exams is seen as the ultimate goal, and getting into an IIT or a top medical college is celebrated as a dream come true. But once inside, many students start facing mental trauma, anxiety, and extreme stress. The fear of failure, pressure to perform, expectations from family and society, and the feeling of loneliness all add up. Movies like "3 Idiots" showed us the reality behind engineering colleges, the emotional breakdowns, and the silent struggles of students. Yet, even years later, little has changed on the ground. After the April suicide case, IIT Kharagpur introduced a barcode system on hostel room doors, allowing students to scan and reach out for counseling help. But clearly, more needs to be done. Mental health support should not be limited to occasional workshops or online forms. A psychological support class or session should be held daily in such institutions, where students can openly talk about what they’re going through and get professional help without feeling judged or weak. We don’t know what situation a student might face at any given moment. A single word or pressure from any side—academic, social, or personal—can trigger serious consequences. Students are not machines. Everyone demands perfection, but nobody asks how the student is actually feeling.
