Here you will see the annual Camborne Trevithick Day held on the final Saturday of April. The day is a celebration of the life of the great Cornish engineer and inventor, Richard Trevithick. Trevithick will forever been known for revolutionising mining in Cornwall, and across the globe by using high-pressure steam (rather than at the time the common low-pressure steam) within the steam engines that pumped water and hoisted ore from our tin and copper mines. By harnessing the power of high-pressure steam, Trevithick went about putting his knowledge towards inventing the first self-propelled steam engine known as 'The Puffing Devil' in 1801 and by 1804 he invented the world’s first steam railway locomotive at Samuel Homfray’s Penydaren Ironworks in South Wales. This locomotive hauled a load of 10 tons of iron and 70 men along 10 miles of tramway. Thus, within the span of a few years Trevithick had changed the landscape of industrial mobility with the inventions of the railway and road going steam traction engines. Within this video you will see a wide variety of steam tractions engines that all derive from Trevithick's early invention 'The Puffing Devil'. Although, the modern steam traction engine design didn't come about for another 60 years after 'The Puffing Devil', when Thomas Aveling built what is considered the first steam traction engine due to it being the first to have front wheel steer and the rear wheels to be gear driven. The steam engines that appear in this video are; Aveling & Porter no. 8116 'Dolly Gray' Aveling & Porter no. 9008 'George' Aveling & Porter no. 10159 'Blackberry Jack' Aveling & Porter no. 10594 'Hercules' Aveling & Porter no. 11446 'Seagry' Breda no. 5031 'Francesca' Burrell no. 2909 'Cornishman' Burrell no. 3159 'The Gladiator' Burrell no. 3385 'The Guv'Nor' Burrell no. 3812 'Haig' Burrell no. 3937 'Janet' Burrell no. 4040 Clayton & Shuttleworth no. 48656 'Sonsie Quine' Foden no. 10530 'Pride of the West' Fowler no. 14694 Fowler no. 15163 Fowler no. 18075 'Britannia' Fowler no. 19205 'Lady Gwen' Marshall no. 62121 'The Whale' Marshall no. 84921 'Reo' Marshall no. 89543 'Ultimate' Mclaren no. 1534 'Cracker' Ransomes Sims & Jefferies no. 38088 'Enterprise' Richard Trevithick's replica 'The Puffing Devil' Ruston Hornsby no. 169167 'Trevithick' Ruston Proctor no. 48359 'Pride of Barum' Wallis & Steevens no. 7247 'Gromit'
