Zhangjiajie (张家界) is a prefecture-level city located in the northwestern part of Hunan Province (湖南省), China. It encompasses the district of Yongding, Wulingyuan (武陵源), and the counties of Cili and Sangzhi. The city is renowned for its breathtaking natural scenery, including the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a part of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, which was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. The area now known as Zhangjiajie has been inhabited since the Stone Age, with human settlement dating back 100,000 years. It was previously named Dayong (大庸) and has a recorded history dating back to 221 BC. The city's name was changed to Zhangjiajie in 1994, after the national forest park located within its territory to enhance its prominence following its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name "Zhangjiajie" translates to "Zhang family homeland," reflecting the area's historical significance and its connection to the Zhang family. Zhangjiajie administers two districts—Yongding and Wulingyuan—and two counties—Cili (慈利县) and Sangzhi (桑植县). The city's landscape is characterized by its unique geological formations, including thousands of quartzite sandstone pillars, many of which are over 200 meters (660 feet) high, alongside ravines, gorges, streams, natural bridges, and caves. This distinctive terrain not only makes it a popular tourist destination but also a natural wonder that attracts researchers and nature enthusiasts from around the world. Transportation in Zhangjiajie includes the Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport, offering flights to major cities in China and some international destinations. The city is also accessible by rail, with the Zhangjiajie railway station and the newer Zhangjiajie West railway station connecting it to various parts of China. The G5513 Changsha–Zhangjiajie Expressway links the city with Changsha, the provincial capital, facilitating road travel.
