Vodka Doesn't (Always) Suck: Luksusowa and Woody Creek Potato Vodka reviews

Vodka: That Which Must Not Be Reviewed, at least not without tongue firmly in cheek - because we all know they're all the same, and that you should be drinking whiskey instead. Or are they, and should you? Dunking on vodka and poking fun at those buying it has long been an easy way to build cachet here on WhiskeyTube, and I'm not exempting myself from this (after all, when I needed to review Polmos Polmos Rectified Spirit at    • Tom the Whiskey Fund Manager Discovers the...   I called in Tom for the job). But with the era of zillion-times-distilled, diamond-filtered overpriced celebrity-endorsed vodkas mostly over, the justification for all that feels like it's swiftly running dry. Save Dan Aykroyd's alien skull thing still hanging in there, the celebrities and the unjustifiable hype have now long since moved on to tequila and (yes) whiskey. Why the continued disparagement, then, with Metallica's black brandy-finished God-knows-what making the past crimes of vodka feel archaic and quaint? Maybe it's just empty cultural inertia, perhaps bulwarked by a little unpleasant elitism, classism, and sexism (as if per definitio anything imbibed by the newbs, or by the poors, or by women, cannot be worthwhile). So maybe it's time to give vodka, that most humble of spirits, a fair second look. Not any watered-down Archer Daniels Midland NGS, though, today we're looking at stuff that's actually going to retain some character from the fermentation and the raw materials. Rye-based options have been my favorites in the past but today it's a pair of potato vodkas, one from the new world and one from the old (and no, not Tito's). Stats: Luksusowa Potato Vodka (Poland; "triple distilled" potatoes, bottled circa 2022; 40% ABV), 76/100 Woody Creek 100% Potato Vodka (Basalt, Colorado; "batch distilled" rio grande russet potatoes from Woody Creek, bottled circa 2022; 40% ABV), 83/100 The Luksusowa is fairly light and understated - those shochus I did a few weeks ago came to mind - but it's surprisingly substantive on the palate and, for thirteen bucks, has fairly solid character. No cap, I'd take a glass of this over a quite a few middling whiskies. But the Woody Creek needs no such budgetary qualification: this stuff is _good_, full stop. Indeed, even if they're probably better known for their whiskey these days (gasp), the distillery seems to be putting a lot of trouble into this supposedly lesser product: it's all from a single varietal of potatoes chosen by them specifically for vodka production, sourced from farms a few miles down the road. Would I love to see a version of this bottled at higher proof, perhaps pulled off the still a few plates lower? Yes, yes I would: sell it for $40-50 and call it a Kartoffelschnaps, and I'm in. But even as is, their vodka is something I can absolutely recommend to the brave and the curious. There is one hitch with Woody Creek, though: they're endorsed by William H.
