Indian Railways is preparing for one of the most significant capacity expansions in its history, with a plan to double the train-originating capacity of major Indian cities over the next five years and achieve full capacity doubling by 2030. The roadmap, outlined in a PIB press release issued by the Ministry of Railways, aims to address rising passenger demand, ease congestion at heavily burdened stations, and strengthen nationwide rail connectivity. Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that sustained growth in rail travel makes large-scale infrastructure augmentation essential. Indian Railways is therefore focusing on expanding coaching terminals, enhancing sectional and operational capacity, and upgrading infrastructure across key urban centres to meet future demand and improve overall network efficiency. The capacity augmentation strategy follows a multi-pronged approach. It includes expanding existing terminals, constructing new terminals in and around cities, setting up mega coaching complexes, and increasing track capacity through advanced signalling systems, traffic facility works, and multi-tracking. Importantly, planning will not be limited to major stations alone. Surrounding and satellite stations will also be upgraded so that congestion is distributed across the network rather than being shifted from one location to another. The plan also differentiates between suburban and non-suburban traffic, recognising their distinct operational requirements. A holistic infrastructure upgrade is being discussed for 48 major cities across the country, where coordinated improvements are expected to play a key role in achieving the capacity-doubling objective. While the long-term goal is to double capacity by 2030, Indian Railways expects incremental gains over the next five years, allowing passengers to experience improvements much sooner. Zonal Railways have been directed to prepare detailed capacity augmentation plans at the divisional level, covering terminals, sections, yards, and operational bottlenecks. Together, these measures are intended to reduce congestion, improve service reliability, and support the continued growth of rail travel in India. #IndianRailways #RailwayInfrastructure #RailwayExpansion #RailCapacity #RailwayModernisation #IndiaInfrastructure #TransportInfrastructure #RailwayNews #RailwayDevelopment #RailwayPlanning #Railway2030 #UrbanTransport #PublicTransport #RailConnectivity #IndianEconomy FOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM - / powertrain_yt FACEBOOK - / powertrainofficial TWITTER - / powertrain_yt _____________________________________________________________________ INTRO MUSIC IF PRESENT - LEMMiNO - A THOUSAND YEARS • LEMMiNO - A Thousand Words CC BY-SA 4.0
