On the occasion of the exhibition ‘Animal Omen’ from 16 January to 15 February 2025 at Opera Gallery Madrid, Miguel Sainz Ojeda opens the doors of his studio to reveal the creative process behind his bold and evocative paintings. Located in an industrial space overlooking the heart of Madrid, Sainz Ojeda’s studio offers a window into the vibrant world of his art, where the boundaries between the real and imagined collide. In this video, take a closer look at Sainz Ojeda’s creative process, which begins with raw, spontaneous gestures—spray paint splashes, sweeping charcoal lines, and bold, expressive colour strokes. From this abstraction, figures—mouths, eyes, and creatures—organically emerge, creating a phantasmagoric universe where figuration and abstraction merge. His work invites viewers to rediscover the world through a childlike sense of wonder, offering a glimpse into a universe filled with masks, creatures, and mysterious signs. Drawing influence from street art, European pictorial traditions, and American Abstract Expressionism, Sainz Ojeda's paintings oscillate between innocence and cruelty, exploring the subconscious as both a source of liberation and self-knowledge. Each piece serves as a visual dialogue, provoking thought and emotion with its playful rhythms, intense contrasts, and vibrant energy.
