At least 27 people were killed and 50 others injured after a suicide bomber set off explosives in a crowded Shia mosque in southwestern Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, on Monday. Witnesses who survived the attack said that around 400 Shia Muslims were wrapping up a religious ritual in the mosque when the attacker suddenly charged into the auditorium and set off the bomb. They recalled the terrifying moment of the attack. "I sat in the back of the mosque, and the blast went off abruptly. I lost my memory at that moment until I found myself shrouded in black smoke. I got back on my feet and saw everybody around me lying down on ground, bloodstains were all over the place, and all the windows were broken," said Abdul Azim, a witness. "When I turned around, I found many people lying in pools of blood. I hoped they would survive just like me, but a lot of them died on ground as I watched," said Ali Ahmed, another witness. So far, no organization has claimed responsibility for the attack. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani issued an announcement through his office condemning the attack, saying that those who perpetrated the atrocity will pay a hefty price. The security situation in Afghanistan has been worsening since the beginning of 2016. A United Nations report showed that around 5,200 civilians were killed or injured in violent attacks in Afghanistan in the first half of 2016, a record-high since 2009.
