January 6, 2021 Hangout Recap: *Please subscribe* Marco Gaisser wowed us this week not by looking far away with a telescope, but by looking close up with a microscope. He shared some great materials and we all discussed details of the features we were looking at. We looked at NWA 5000, 1.06g Lunar feldspathic breccia, NWA 11220 paired with NWA 7400 aka “Black Beauty” 0.08g Martian fragmental breccia, NWA 7325, 0.275g ungrouped Achondrite, NWA 5552, 8.91g (L3,S2,W1), Tirhert, 0.683g, monomict Eucrite, NWA 7231, 9.289g, polymict Eucrite, NWA 5357 3.8g polymict Diogenite, and lastly Fukang, 14.01g main group Pallasite. Thanks for spending your holiday time (vacation) with us the past few weeks. Stephen Amara, of Space Matter, was finally able to demonstrate his meteorite cutting set-up and process. (I have only been asking for 6 months.) He had just finished with 46g worth of slices, potential primitive LL3. He had a space gem in hiding, a remarkable 122g individual that he sliced live. OMG! It is gorgeous and just packed with chondrules within chondrules. He has over 400g of this potential L or LL3 chondrite. He provided great tips for anyone wanting to start or better their skills. Mike Kelly showed us his new Cactus Springs, a small and very fresh looking American find. (Nevada 2008 L6,S4,W1) The finder has released only 3 pieces from the 176g single stone main mass and that’s all that’s likely to come out. Mike’s 0.7g slice is cut thick and shows the great crust and low weathering. He also shared Richland (Fredericksburg is an unofficial synonym for Richland), a Texas Iron, IIAB with great Neumann bands. The first piece was found in a dry well in Fredericksburg. The second was found 300km away in Richland and chemically proven to be “indistinguishable” (same meteorite) by analysis. One or both were subjected to transportation to the find sites at some point. The final piece was a rather solid Dronino shale ball. It shows the onion peel weathering layers of a large Iron caused by terrestrialization effects. Arthur Wagner showed off a 228.7g Iron meteorite that a friend purchased in Tucson 2 or 3 years ago. The ID label was lost, and the meteorite name was forgotten. Arthur was able to correctly help to identify it as being a Nantan. Ron Metchis displayed his Canyon Diablo collection that includes: his first a 835g with a large graphite nodule, two individuals weighing 1,080g and 662g, and a sliced 520g. My wife Sue and Mark Lyon collaborated on my Christmas present -again! She made a video to introduce me to each of the meteorites and agreed to buy any of them for my present on top of the ‘Meteorite Experience’ itself. My choices were a 20g slice of the “Stained Glass Lunar” Touat 005, a 22g Martian poikilitic Shergottite, a 64g slice of Allende CV3, THE meteorite that confirmed that rocks do fall from the sky -Ensisheim (witnessed in 1492), a 235g end cut with fusion crust of a Rumuruti chondrite currently being classified, and a 2.95g nearly complete and fully oriented Tarda (C2-unpgrouped 2020 witnessed fall in Morocco) with gun-metal blue fusion crust on the reverse side. I showed off my new 44g fusion crusted HUNK of Mars (Shergottite). I never thought I’d own a piece of Mars this size! I show that a good number of nice meteorites are coming out of Chile in South America, not just NW Africa. My new 653g main mass of the 715g TKW of Catalina 238 (available for purchase) is from Antofagasta, Chile. It is classified as L6,W2 and found in 2017.
