Jared Christophel, MD is a Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at UVA Health System. Dr. Christophel discusses facial reconstruction after patients have had skin cancer. For more information visit https://uvahealth.com/services/plasti... Transcript One of the most common reasons that we see patients here is for reconstruction after a removal of a large skin cancer on the face and the reconstruction for a specific hole varies as much as the location of the hole. A lot of things go into it. General health of the patient, the age, what their skin texture and type is like already, and then probably the biggest determinant is the size of the hole. So you can imagine that a rather small hole like the size of a lima bean on your nose can be readily repaired by just moving some of the tissue around that you still have on your nose and we leave that scar in as pleasant of a place as possible. However, once the dermatologists or the head and neck surgeon has to remove a very large piece of skin, well then we no longer have enough skin available to just pull it together in one fashion or another and we usually have to go somewhere else on the patient's body to borrow some skin. I would recommend you come to UVA because this is one of the surgeries that we do most often. So I'm doing 350 to 400 of these a year. It is one of my favorite surgeries to do and someone who does it time and time again just means that there's a lot more experience and with all the subtleties they're involved in these types of surgeries.
