How to Configure Microsoft Project Online This specific video walks students through the process of creating custom lookup tables, custom fields, a Project Center view in which the custom fields are added, then testing results. You have the product now you would like to get your environment to have those powerful views you have seen on the Microsoft website! A view of all projects grouped by Program, graphical indicators representing how the project is tracking on cost, schedule, and overall health would be very nice, yes? Learning just a little bit about how to configure MS Project Online will get you very far with the product. There are many areas within the product that would require configuration, depending on the needs of the organization. Those that want to use resource management in order to understand resource capacity, demand, and utilization will want to setup this area. Create a custom field for role, perhaps skill would be a good start. Then a view that would group by these resource attributes. Most importantly the resources would need to be tagged with the appropriate value. This is where we can begin to understand resource capacity and demand by role. Reporting When considering reporting, custom fields and lookup tables are typically very important. For it is these items that play a big role in making the system work for a specific organization. For instance, if your organization assigns projects to Business Units, creating a custom field for this and tagging projects with the correct value is key. This will provide the capability for reports show cost by business unit or work by business unit, as well as projects by business unit. Therefore reporting is often a key discussion when discussing microsoft project online setup and microsoft project online configuration. Power BI and Excel are often used to provide additional visualization of data from Microsoft Project Online beyond what the views can provide. In either case the products connect to MS Project Online via the OData feeds. These feeds provide access to a variety of tables that contain a large amount of Project, Task, and Resource information. Views We mentioned a Project Center view earlier in our summary. The MS Project Online also allows us to create and configure a custom view for Resource Center, (grouping resources by resource attributes) Project details (display elements of project tasks, perhaps graphical indicators). Custom views may also be created for Microsoft Project Professional, the desktop client. Strategy The strategy section of MS Project Online provides the ability to select portfolios of projects that align with a business strategy and strategic objectives. Including constraining the portfolio by resource and cost. The configuration of this section typically includes a Role resource attribute, as well as Currency attributes for Cost information. The portfolio management process also requires Business Drivers and Impact Statements. These elements and potentially several others round out those needed for project portfolio management analysis in the Microsoft PPM solution. The Desktop Client, Microsoft Project Professional Microsoft Project is as give of a component to Microsoft Project Online as ever. For it is MS Project that contains the full scheduling engine needed for complex project management. MS Project allows us to create a project schedule with assigned tasks that is a high level plan, or very detailed with a specified project team. These project plans can also be saved as a project plan template, and used as part of the demand management features for project requests and project intake. Any solid project management plan will consist of project templates, and a project management methodology. Summary As a project manager, you focus to deliver the project on time and within budget. Senior management quite often will have another focus – the 30,000 foot view of how things look (organization-level). Projects are how organizations meet their strategic goals. Strategic goals accomplishment delivers business value. Project portfolio management , the Portfolio Analysis process, helps organizations to select the projects that will help organizations achieve their strategic goals. Microsoft Project Online's Strategy module helps organizations use an objective process to selecting the "right" projects. https://integent.com https://integent.com/microsoft-projec... https://integent.com/microsoft-projec... https://integent.com/microsoft-projec... https://integent.com/microsoft-projec... https://integent.com/consulting-2/mic... https://integent.com/consulting-2/mic...
