The disease is caused by the roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides and its lifecycle involves migration from the intestines to the lungs and back. In the lungs, the larvae cause irritation and symptoms such as coughing and low-grade fever, and in severe cases, eosinophilic pneumonitis or Loeffler's syndrome. When the larvae return to the intestines, they can cause symptoms like abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and nutrient deficiencies due to prolonged infection. The primary diagnostic method for Ascariasis is the identification of characteristic eggs or worms in the stool, and treatments typically involve anthelmintic drugs like Albendazole or Mebendazole. Although treatment can eliminate the worms, re-infection is possible as it does not prevent a new infection.
