(8 Sep 1997) Serbo-Croat/Nat Foreign peacekeepers and police loyal to Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic foiled Monday's potentially explosive rally in the presidential stronghold by supporters of Radovan Karadzic. Only a few of Plavsic's foes, supporters of wartime leader Radovan Karadzic, appeared in the centre of the northern Bosnian town of Banja Luka. NATO had feared a large demonstration could turn violent in an attempt by the Bosnian Serb hardliners to run Plavsic from power. Only about 500 Karadzic backers made it to central Banja Luka on Monday for the rally, which had been planned for the early evening. Waving Karadzic posters, they chanted anti-Plavsic slogans, but were virtually drowned out by a larger crowd of her supporters. Plavsic supporters, kicking and hitting wildly, burned Karadzic posters. Momcilo Krajisnik, Karadzic's chief aide, was able to address his supporters only briefly, before his remarks were drowned by jeers from his opponents. SUPER CAPTION: Momcilo Krajisnik, Karadzic's chief aide Despite fears that the demonstrators might resort to violence, the march was rowdy but organized, with police serving as escorts along the route. Marchers vocally chanted their support for Karadzic, having achieved a small victory in even holding the rally at all. Plavsic, with strong backing from foreign envoys and forces, began to try to wrench control of the Serb half of Bosnia from Karadzic in July. She accused her former mentor of impoverishing his people by rejecting the Dayton peace accord and enriching himself through crime and corruption. Karadzic stepped down as Bosnian Serb leader last year after he was twice indicted on genocide charges by a U-N tribunal, but he continues to wield tremendous influence. In one of the few violent incidents, Plavsic supporters destroyed a BMW car belonging to a senior Karadzic supporter as the crowd started to break up.
