Known as the ‘Showboat,’ this formidable warship served with distinction in the Pacific Theater, earning 15 battle stars—the most awarded to any U.S. battleship during the war. Commissioned in 1941, the USS North Carolina was a technological marvel of its time, boasting impressive firepower with nine 16-inch/45 caliber Mark 6 guns, capable of hitting targets up to 23 miles away. Her secondary armament included 20 5-inch/38 caliber dual-purpose guns, complemented by over 80 anti-aircraft guns that helped protect her and the fleet from aerial attacks. The ship carried a complement of over 2,300 sailors and officers, creating a bustling community at sea. These men endured long deployments, harsh conditions, and fierce battles, including key operations in the Solomon Islands, the Philippines, and the iconic Battle of Leyte Gulf. After her retirement in 1947, the USS North Carolina found a new mission as a memorial and museum, proudly moored in Wilmington, North Carolina. Today, she stands as a tribute to the brave men who served aboard her and to all who fought for freedom during World War II. This aerial footage offers a unique perspective of the battleship’s sleek design, intricate deck structures, and historic significance. Experience the legacy of the USS North Carolina like never before!
