The 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath welcomes the newly reinstated 495th Fighter Squadron equipped with the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II. The 495th FS were formed as far back as 15th January 1941 but disbanded in 1944. With a longer active spell on the 1st April 1977, they were reinstated once more but disbanded again on the 13th December 1991. Finally, as recent as the 1st October 2021, the 495th TFS, were reinstated to RAF Lakenheath as the 495th Fighter Squadron, equipped with the 5th Generation stealth F-35A Lightning II. 4 of LN tails of the 495th FS nicknamed the “Valkyries” arrived at RAF LAKENHEATH on the 15th December 2021. There are expected to more arriving throughout the year. The F-35A is an agile, versatile, high-performance, 9g-capable multirole fighter that combines stealth, sensor fusion and unprecedented situational awareness. The aircraft will belong to the 495th Fighter Squadron, which was nicknamed the “Valkyries” during a voting contest in 2020. The new F-35 squadron will consist of 24 aircraft, delivered in a phased approach. Ted brought the luck 2 days in a row as we visited on the 4th and the 5th of January.
