December 25, 1987 - In his seventh game as a member of the New York Knicks, 5-foot-11 point guard Billy Donovan played seven minutes and scored two points in a 91-87 loss to the Detroit Pistons. On account of his relative lack of size and professional experience, Donovan found himself targeted by Joe Dumars and Isiah Thomas throughout the evening. Donovan, who'd led Providence to the Final Four earlier in the year, was drafted in the third round (68th overall) by the Utah Jazz in the 1987 NBA Draft. After being waived by the Jazz at the start of the 1987-88 regular season, Donovan signed with the Knicks in December, coming aboard to play under Rick Pitino, his former head coach at Providence who'd since made a move to the NBA. During his one season as a pro, Donovan averaged 2.4 points and 2.0 assists in 44 appearances with the Knicks, closing out the year with his finest performance—a 14-point, 2-rebound, 2-assist showing against the eventual conference finalist Dallas Mavericks. Following his stint in New York, Donovan tried his hand as a Wall Street stock broker before opting to join the coaching staff at the University of Kentucky, where Pitino had taken over as head coach. In April of 2015, Donovan would make his return to the NBA, this time as a head coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Christmas Day Box Score: https://www.basketball-reference.com/...
