This is a $500 tax break for some of your qualifying dependents who don’t qualify for the Child Tax Credit. You can get this credit for children who aren’t qualified for the Child Tax Credit because they are 17 or older at the end of the year or have an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number instead of a Social Security number. Other relatives and people you support can also qualify if they meet certain requirements. If they aren’t related to you, they must have lived with you for the entire year; you must provide more than half of their financial support; and they must also be a US citizen, US resident, or US national; have an annual gross income under a certain amount; not be filing a joint return with their spouse; and not have been claimed by anyone else for this or the Child Tax Credit.
