Leicesters German Expressionist Collection: http://germanexpressionismleicester.org/ The inspiration behind and work produced by the German expressionists is discussed and shown in this short series of films based around the works currently on display at Leicester’s New Walk Museum and Art Gallery’s Collection. Franz Marc (1880-1916) was a German painter and printmaker born in Munich, where he also studied. During visits to Paris in 1903 and 1907 he discovered French Impressionism and from 1907 onward he began animal studies, including anatomy and movement. Red Woman was one of Marc’s last paintings containing the human figure and reflects the humanistic idea of man’s interrelationship with nature. This short film discusses the importance of this work and how it came to be in the collection.
