New Prospects for Traditional Architecture: Nicholas Boys Smith in discussion with Samuel Hughes. Traditional architecture plays an ever-increasing role around the world. The British Government has said that it wants its new towns to be made up of ‘Georgian-style terraces’. The world’s largest architectural patron, the US Federal Government, controversially plans to procure exclusively traditional architecture in future. The urbanistic principles of the traditional revival are now widely accepted in the mainstream. In country after country, the traditional architecture sector is flourishing. Nicholas Boys Smith and Samuel Hughes discuss how traditional architecture can continue to broaden its reach, looking at the challenges and opportunities it will face in the years to come. Nicholas Boys Smith is the founding chairman of the design practice, town-builder and think tank, Create Streets and an influential writer on the design and history of our towns and cities. He was chair of the Office for Place, co-chair of the influential Building Better Building Beautiful Commission and a Commissioner of Historic England until 2022. His books include No Free Parking and Heart in the Right Street. He was awarded an MBE for services to design and place-making in the 2024 New Year’s Honours List. Dr Samuel Hughes is a research fellow at the University of Oxford. He worked as Sir Roger Scruton’s research assistant on the Building Better, Building Beautiful Commission, and has since worked on built environment policy with Policy Exchange, Create Streets, the Office for Place, and the Centre for Policy Studies.
