Dave visits a short six mile branch crossing three small former mining towns in North East Derbyshire, connecting Chesterfield and Mansfield. Hi and welcome back to my new page - and page name. This short but sweet six passenger rail route between Chesterfield and Creswell crosses through the once important industrial towns of Staveley and Clowne, once having connected passengers and coal alike alike between North Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. There were over 25 collieries in the Chesterfield district in its heyday, quite mirroring the area around Barnsley in South Yorkshire, only a few miles away. Although the line finally wound down trade altogether in the 90s sporadic traffic continued for some years but the line sat mothballex until from 2006. I first discovered it laying trackless late 2015 from Barrow Hill to Staveley and eventually set out exploring over the couple of years to come, although initially discovered only the line through Bolsover from Poolsbrook. Getting to explore the sights of Seymour Junction a slight bit more intrinsically however pointed me over to the left, and on towards Clowne. This former single track line having not been long lifted and thus still retaining its ballast, took me through a windy collection of cuttings, embankments and bridges towards Clowne. Although I had to cut my exploration just abruptly short of Clowne the first time round, I returned soon after to find the track bed refurbished as the Clowne Greenway right through to Creswell with a wealth of former railway still wonderfully preserved - not least a concrete gangers hut and also some generous usage of former sleepers. The obvious feature attraction on visiting is the restored station platform at Clowne and Barlborough, a project undergone by the town's preservation group 2019 and 2022 which saw new features added and reinstated, not least a superb 14- foot railway signal on the end. What's almost equally interesting is that another former line which came in from Rotherham via Spinkhill flies over this route to land at its own separate station close by, but hey I think I'm spoiling enough already. Enjoy this one and please hit subscribe if you want to see more. Peace.
