Playthrough of German Campaign in Sudden Strike 1. Mission 9 "Firework" Ok, so now for real. This mission is hard, very hard. Even harder if you decide to not use save/load feature. Our task is to destroy ammo depot in the north (we actually get some Russian units near it. I assume that it is a bug, so I don't use them). On our way we can capture 3 factories, that will produce units for us. Intro says that if we capture the factory in the middle, we will also get some Katyushas, but I never managed to do it (actually didn't even try). The usual approach with slow advance will not work, as enemy has some Katyushas on his own and he is not afraid to use it. Several times, when I was sieging the enemy, my units (including artillery) were blasted by multiple enemy rocket salvos. Other than that we only get couple of tanks, while enemy has lots of them. Also if we take too long to reach the factories, they will be swarming with enemy tanks. The war of attrition is generally against us, so the best tactic that I found is to be really aggressive. Start by dropping the paratroopers on the east sides of 2 factories south of the river. At this point there aren't many enemy units there, so it should be easy to capture them. Once you capture the factories prepare defenses - hide some snipers in watchtowers for spotting (with hold fire order) and man AT cannons with other troops. First factory should shortly start to produce tanks, cannons, howitzers and supply trucks, however in order to work, there need to be free space outside of the buildings. Once we get first howitzers, we will not be able to move it until trucks arrive and production will be blocked. Once it is moved, it will produce units in quick succession for some time. Also remember to refill ammo at your cannons from time to time, to make sure that they are able to destroy enemy tanks (they will send some from time to time). In the second factory it should be more peaceful. You can send some snipers to the forest to the south, to destroy enemy AA and AT cannons. Next we need to move our main force to the first factory. At this point some reinforcements should arrive. Take all the artillery that you can, starting with howitzers and rocket mortarts and move them through the forest. There can be some enemies there, so I decided to send scouting plane there, to speed things up. Once our troops arrive at the factory, unload troops from few trucks and pick up ammo crates. They will become useful shortly. Also it is generally good to gather as many howitzers produced by factories as possible. Due to Katyushas there is always a risk that some of them will be destroyed. Leave some units for defense and move remaining forces to second factory. Check on first one from time to time to move produced tanks and supply trucks to your main forces. Next objective will be to conquer the town to the north. At this point your troops will be getting into range of enemy artillery. Basically entire city is surrounded by it, so even enemy seeing us will result in heavy losses. Put some troops a bit further in front of your main forces, in hope that will be blasted instead (sorry guys...) and start shelling the city. Once you get the town, things will become even more difficult. First secure bridge to the north (blow it up for now) and small water crossing to the east. Water crossing is crucial, as enemy will send there a wave of infantry from time to time. Place some snipers, rifflemans, officers to ensure that enemy is killed before they can see you. If they do, they will fire multiple artillery shells at your forces. Also don't go too close to the bridge itself - enemy will also send some units there from time to time. Now we need to deal with enemy artillery. While it is possible to shell every square inch arround the city, due to threat of Katyushas I decided to go for more aggressive approach. I sent scout plane to the other side of the bridge for spotting and destroyed enemy with artillery. Next, in between of enemy attacks, I choose a squad of brave troops and sent them through water crossing to the east. Supported by artillery they managed to destroy few tanks, and find few enemy howitzers. Their bravery will not be forgotten [*] They saved lives of many troops. At this point, despite heavy losses, I decided to push through the bridge in the city. It needs to be done somewhat carefully, but still swiftly. Enemy has still many howitzers, so if they spot us at the bridge, it will be almost immediately destroyed, killing everything that was on it at that time. After some additional shelling I managed to secure the land on other part of the bridge. At this point I decided to cross it with as many units as possible and push for the warehouse. Since we only have to destroy it, we don't actually have to capture the terrain near it. Just place your artillery in its range and blast it off the map.
