RAF Harrington Thor nuclear missile site

Between 1958 and 1963, sixty American built Thor nuclear armed missiles were hosted by the RAF across eastern England. Designed to strike targets deep inside the Soviet Union, but with a range limited to around 1,500 miles, America could not host the missiles themselves and alternative bases were sought out. With many NATO countries refusing to host the weapons, Britain stepped in and constructed 20 launch sites, each armed with three of the liquid fuelled weapons. Only a few sites remain in relatively untouched condition, with the site at RAF Harrington being the best preserved.
