At the age of 13, Kiara Nirghin was diagnosed with Bilharzia, a parasite-induced disease, and three months later with bacterial meningitis, which is quite literally the inflammation of the membranes surrounding your brain and spinal cord. She spent a portion her junior year in hospital. During this time, she remembers, lying in her hospital bed with excruciating pain and thinking if this is the power of the brain to endure such immense pain, how would this brain’s power be used towards something more productive. In this inspiring talk by 17-year old,she asks an important question: Are we wasting our brains? She might just be 17-years-old, but Kiara Nirghin has the world at her feet with her forward-thinking and game-changer innovation. She won Google's Community Impact Award for creating a super absorbent polymer capable of storing reserves of water, which could essentially combat drought. Kiara was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and hopes to encourage other young scientists to similarly, make an impact on the world around them. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
