Lieutenant General Hisao Tani was a senior officer in the Imperial Japanese Army whose name became linked to atrocities committed during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Born in 1882 in Okayama Prefecture, Tani pursued a professional military career, serving in earlier campaigns before rising to divisional command during Japan’s expansion into China. After fighting escalated in 1937, Japanese forces advanced toward Nanjing, then the capital of the Republic of China. In December 1937, troops under Tani’s 6th Division were among the units that entered Nanjing following its capture. In the weeks that followed, large-scale killings, sexual violence, and destruction were carried out by Japanese forces in what became known as the Nanjing Massacre. Historical estimates of the death toll vary widely, but tens of thousands of civilians and disarmed soldiers were killed during the occupation. After Japan’s surrender in 1945, Tani was arrested and tried before the Nanjing War Crimes Tribunal. Prosecutors argued that, as a senior commander, he bore responsibility for crimes committed by troops under his authority. The court rejected his defense that he was merely following orders and found him guilty of war crimes. In April 1947, Hisao Tani was executed. His trial became part of the broader postwar effort to establish accountability for atrocities committed during the conflict in China.
