In this recording of our Ask an Expert series, we’re joined by Brendan Spearin from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, along with Chris Herc and Mikeala Novak from Grand Council Treaty #3. They share insights into the challenges posed by Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) in Canadian waters and the efforts underway to address them. The webinar explores the risks AIS present in the Lake of the Woods watershed and beyond, and learn about the work happening both locally and nationally to respond. This session highlights the collaborative efforts between DFO and Grand Council Treaty #3 to monitor and manage the spread of invasive species. You’ll hear about recent initiatives and research, the tools and strategies used to prevent new introductions, early detection monitoring for zebra mussels across Treaty #3 Territory and what the results show so far, the first season of operating a boat decontamination station in Kenora, and other project highlights from this partnership. DFO also provides insights from their board crossing program and highway blitz. This session was hosted by the Lake of the Woods Water Sustainability Foundation (LOWWSF) as part of the 2025 Ask an Expert webinar series, which features leading freshwater research and stewardship across the Rainy–Lake of the Woods basin and beyond.
