3 Years ago while I was on the Eagles View Trail in Reynolds Park in southern Jefferson County, I saw a magnificent view south towards Pike Peak, and noticed a number of smaller but striking peaks I knew nothing about. These turn out to be Cathedral Spires, Long Scraggy Peak, and Thunder Butte. That left me with an idea to someday summit all these peaks. I did a hike/bike trip up Long Scraggy Peak last year, and it was a very enjoyable experience. This time we drove back to the Buffalo Creek area for some weekend camping/hiking. Day 1 objective was Cathedral Spires. This area is more famous for rock climbing with numerous difficult TRAD routes going up the rock faces/spires, but based on limited info I gathered, there is a scrambling route to get to the summit as well. From the trailhead, I took the Sunshine trail all the way up to the base of the climbing wall, then skirted around to the left until I reached a ridge that looks doable. The scrambling was mostly class 2/3, with occasional chimney or gully that approaches class 4. Before long I was on top of the summit block looking down on different rock spires. The views from up there are quite good and well worth the effort. Total stats: 2.8 miles with 2000' elevation gain Music: Coalescence and Tempest, by Punch Deck
