2 UNESCO sites at the 'Beemster' area of the Netherlands.

We went on a UNESCO world heritage adventure in the Netherlands and de Beemster was our first stop. It's an area North of Amsterdam and it used to be part of the sea until in 1612 they drained the area and thus created new land to farm from. The produce helped to feed the growing city of Amsterdam. They drained the area with the help of windmills that were used as pumps. For the time a fenomenal achievement and that's also why the region received the UNESCO world heritage status and recognition. As if that's not enough there's another site in De Beemster that received UNESCO recognition. Fort Spijkerboor, which is situated in De Beemster is part of the Amsterdam defense line which in itself is also recognised as UNESCO world heritage.
