Manufacturer: Hensoldt, Wetzlar (Germany) Application: Civil / Military (?) Era: WW1 Magnification: 6x Objective Lens Size: 36mm Specifics: In 1905, the Hensoldt Company located in the town of Wetzlar, Germany, began producing straight-sighted binoculars using roof prisms. These binoculars were called Dialyts and had an advantage over other binoculars because they are relatively light and slim, a decisive factor, especially when hunting. From 1909 to 1920 these binoculars were continuously improved and the heavy models emerged, which can be recognized by the massive, closed bridge. These Dialyts are also known as "Hindenburg-Dialyts" because Paul von Hindenburg, who was Field Marshall of the German Army in WW1, could be seen with these binoculars on photos (you can still find these photos on the internet by searching with the terms "hindenburg" and "fernglas"). The abbreviation A.D. stands for Armee Dialyt (Army Dialyt). Although Hindenburg could be seen with these binoculars in his general uniform, it is not certain whether these binoculars were actually used in the army - the model that can be seen in the video has no official army markings. Nevertheless these types of heavy Dialyts were officially used, at least to a limited extent, during WW1, e.g. the Dialyt with the designation D.F.10x (I'll link the video of the D.F.10x here when the time comes). Dialytes were officially used on a larger scale in WW2, especially among german tank crews.
