M5. Globular cluster in Serpens (Snake)

This cluster was discovered in 1702 by a german astronomer Gottfried Kirch when he was looking for a comet. Charles Messier noted it as a hazy spot, being not able to resolve it to stars in 1764. In 1791 William Herschel counted here up to 200 individual stars. М5 can be found next to star 5 in Serpens with a binocular. It extends to 165 light years, being considered as of the biggest and oldest in Milky Way galaxy. There are 100 thousand stars in it at a distance about 24,5 thousand light years from us. 105 of these stars are variables, and about 90 stars are variable of RR Lyrae type, helping astronomers to determine a distance in space.
