The Alaska Statehood Act was signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on July 7, 1958, after first passing in the U.S. House on May 28, 1958, and in the U.S. Senate on June 30, 1958. The act allowed Alaska to become a state on January 3, 1959, when these scenes were filmed. Here, President Eisenhower signs the official proclamation admitting Alaska as the 49th state. Other participants in the ceremony include Vice President Richard M. Nixon, Alaska Senators Bob Bartlett and Ernest Gruening, Alaska Representative Ralph Rivers, former Territorial Governor of Alaska Mike Stepovich, Acting Territorial Governor of Alaska Waino Hendrickson, and editor/publisher of the "Anchorage Daily Times" Bob Atwood (Color/Silent/16mm film). This film sequence is an excerpt of AAF-1402 from the Bartlett collection held by the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives Department in the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Alaska Film Archives appreciates your support. Your donation in any amount will help us continue important preservation work.
