Rights Groups Expose Miami Conference Whitewashing Saudi Government’s Egregious Human Rights Record

In this February 20 Miami press briefing, experts from DAWN, Human Rights Watch, and Arab Rights and Resource Center expose the role of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) in whitewashing the Saudi government’s human rights abuses. The press briefing was held as the PIF's Future Investment Initiative Institute (FII Institute) Priority Summit took place in Miami from February 19 to 21, 2025. Speakers include Human Rights Watch’s Nicole Widdersheim, Arab Rights and Research Center’s Ahmed Hakami, and DAWN’s Sarah Leah Whitson. The press briefing was organized by DAWN, Human Rights Watch, Arab Rights and Resource Center, and ALQST. The PIF has facilitated and benefited from human rights abuses and the Saudi government regularly uses it to whitewash the Saudi government's abuses. The PIF is the founding partner of the FII Institute, a nonprofit foundation whose board of trustees is appointed by the Saudi government and includes senior government officials. In 2023 and 2024, the US Senate opened a probe investigating Saudi influence in the United States via PIF investments and examining the risks of PIF investments in the US economy.
