We use a tooth a matic and fight a matic for trimming teeth. They are special tools designed just to trim alpaca teeth. They are safe and easy to use after you have learned the right technique. Alpaca front teeth naturally continue to grow throughout their lives. This is to keep up with the continual wearing down of the teeth thru grazing. Because a lot of farm-raised alpacas are not grazing year round but eating hay they need their front teeth trimmed down every year. The tooth a matic is set so that you do not take too much off at one time. If you grind too far you will hit a nerve and cause pain to the animal. Fighting teeth: Alpacas (especially males) have 6 canine fighting teeth. They use these to establish dominancy in a herd and males will actually castrate each other. So for the health and safety of the herd, we will flatten/remove the fighting teeth. The fight a matic is set up like a cast tool. It vibrates so fast that it will only cut teeth and not gums or lips. You set the tool flat at the bottom of the tooth against the gum and gently pull outwards.
