Stein, MD, PhD, the Surgical Director of the ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) and Director of Cardiovascular Research at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, talks about the LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) as essentially a jet engine that pumps blood for patients who are in heart failure. Initially designed as a bridge to heart transplantation, as a way to support the heart until the patient has a heart transplant.
