In this video, we take a look at the golden era of South African television and why it mattered. We reflect on a time when TV brought the country together (as Skeem Saam seems to be doing today). When shows like Generations sparked conversations in playgrounds, due to its cross generational appeal, alongside other brilliant soapies that were airing at the time. We explore the history of television in South Africa, from its late introduction in 1976 and the political reasons behind it, to the restructuring of the SABC and the rise of e.tv as the first free-to-air commercial channel. We also look at platforms like Vuzu and V Entertainment, which gave rise to stars and created important spaces for South African talent. This video examines the impact of iconic shows such as Generations, Live Amp, 10 Over 10, Zaziwa, and Idols, and how events like the Generations cast strike exposed deeper issues within the industry. We discuss how funding, mismanagement, and a focus on profit over storytelling have shaped South African television today. Finally, we celebrate successes like Mzansi Magic and Ferguson Films, which continue to create opportunities, train new talent, and tell authentic South African stories. Ultimately, the video argues that while there have been challenges, there is still hope for local television to thrive once more. 🔗 Sources & Clips Referenced (more) : The History of Television in South Africa • The History Of Television In South Africa : Additional archival clip used: • Exclusive: South Africa's very own super c... 📰 South African History Online 📰 Mail & Guardian — Striking Generations cast members sacked (August 2014) 📰 Bizcommunity — Mzansi Magic audience data 📰 Joburg ETC — Ferguson Films background ⚠️ Copyright Disclaimer (Fair Use) This video contains copyrighted material used under the principles of fair use for commentary, criticism, education, and research, in accordance with Section 12 of the South African Copyright Act.
