The Upper Peninsula is home to some of the most rugged, remote, and beautiful places in the state. But these characteristics also pose serious energy challenges. Some of the highest electric rates in the country are here and renewable energy buildout is slow. Making matters worse is that communities across the UP face socioeconomic challenges but are often passed over for funding and investments. Enter the Alger County project. It's a collaboration between four nonprofit organizations and the 9,000 residents of one of Michigan's most rural counties. The organizations bring the community together, and then the community and organizations work together to enhance local energy systems and get clean energy projects off the ground. It's a truly collaborative effort, and it just might inspire other partnerships in other places.
