CEPOL launches eLessons: a new digital training and learning resource available in LEEd The EU Agency for Law Enforcement Training has released its first two eLessons, a new comprehensive digital training and learning resource designed to address emerging and current training needs of law enforcement officials. The eLessons are compact and easy-to-follow, covering current topics presented engagingly with a focus on practical applicability. Users learn individually, at their own pace, and in an explorative way. Trainers can embed eLessons in their formal training – be it as a requirement in national curricula or as a pre-course activity for CEPOL trainings. Students will obtain certificates and badges upon successful completion of the corresponding online tests. The job-aids embedded in eLessons ensure that the learners will more easily transfer the knowledge and skills learned into their every-day practice. All LEEd users can enrol to eLessons free of charge, without nomination by a CEPOL National Unit and study time. Criminal use of social media eLesson This eLesson consists of three topic chapters as well as a glossary of terms and abbreviations related to investigations on social media. Users can also check their levels of understanding by considering a selection of quiz questions. In more detail, the topic chapters are: 1. The phenomenon of social media: The widespread usage and other characteristics of social media that enable criminals to exploit it. 2. Categories of crimes in which social media are used: Common crimes that are committed or facilitated by social media include phishing, social engineering, social botnets, identity theft, gossip clickbait, trafficking of human beings, stalking and blackmailing, and frauds such as fake payments, rendezvous portals and auctions. 3. Awareness when using social media: Preventive measures and best practices that help protect users of social media from criminal activities, such as using strong passwords, being wary of privacy, being responsible, and using only official apps. Study time: 60 minutes
