This past Sunday, as we stood on the threshold of Lent and just days before Lunar New Year, our worship service became a beautiful tapestry of mountain light, sacred pause, and joyful celebration. Our scripture came from Book of Exodus, where Moses ascends Mount Sinai and enters the cloud for forty days and forty nights to receive the Ten Commandments. We reflected on the holy courage it takes to wait — to resist impulsive reaction and instead trust that guidance unfolds in God’s timing. In a world that moves quickly, we were reminded that there is power in the sacred pause. Because this week also marks Lunar New Year — and the beginning of the Year of the Horse — we honored the rich tradition celebrated across China and throughout much of Asia. The Horse symbolizes energy, boldness, and forward movement. Yet we considered how even the strongest horse needs direction — how momentum without guidance can scatter, but energy consecrated by prayer can transform. We were especially privileged to welcome the orchestra from the Chinese Music Association, whose presence added both beauty and depth to our celebration. Their music felt like a bridge — between cultures, between seasons, between mountain stillness and festive joy. Our magnificent choir opened worship with “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” as the introit — and it truly felt like the mountain itself was singing. Later, their anthem, “I Just Keep Trusting My Lord,” carried us gently back to the heart of the sermon: trust in the waiting, trust in the cloud, trust before the gallop. Many thanks to the rest of our worship leaders! -Don Driftmier for serving as liturgist -River Henderson for serving as acolyte -Mikaela Hill for recording the service -Nico Marucut for being our accompanist -Jeff and Carol Chamlee for providing the gifts for our children and congregation members in honor of Lunar New Year and for the yummy treats during coffee hour -Lou and Joe Diaz for providing the beautiful altar flowers in honor of Lou's birthday!
