Ballot 101: What Amendment 2 actually means for hunting and fishing.

Ever since people started moving to Florida en masse over 100 years ago, there's been a constant battle between human development and animal habitat conservation. There's always been a delicate balance between a human's right to live safely, and be able to hunt and fish for fun and sustenance - with the conservation of the wildlife population around the state. That's the issue at hand with Amendment 2, called "The Right to Fish and Hunt." It reads: "Proposing an amendment to the Florida constitution to preserve forever fishing and hunting, including by the use of traditional methods, as a public right and preferred means of responsibly managing and controlling fish and wildlife." It adds that it would not limit the authority of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The people who are voting for this amendment would like to prevent bans on hunting and fishing. They believe this would protect Florida's economy, as hunting and fishing generate 15 point 8 billion dollars in economic impact. But those against it have issues with the terminology that says killing animals would become the priority method for managing wildlife. They believe conserving and relocating problematic wildlife should not always take second fiddle to killing it. People against the amendment also worry hunting and fishing rights would supersede personal property rights, and you wouldn't be able to keep hunters off your property. And they're worried hunting and fishing could be expanded into state parks and wildlife preserves. It is important to mention, Florida already protects the right to hunt and fish. Florida statute recognizes that: "Hunting, fishing and taking of game are a valued part of the cultural heritage of Florida and should be forever preserved for Floridians". That's already said in the constitution. A vote "Yes" on Amendment 2 means going forward there would be less protection for some animals in our state, as well as fewer restrictions for where and what a Floridian can fish for and hunt.
