We spent the day exploring the McDade Recreational Trail, which runs most of the length of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area along the Delaware River in Pennsylvania. Starting at the southernmost access point at the Hialeah parking area, we rode 6 miles north to Owens (Freeman Tract Road) and then returned for a 12-mile round trip. Here are some highlights from the ride. The section we covered is perfect for mountain bikes and has a smooth, well-maintained rail-trail feel. There are a few steep hills between Hialeah and Smithfield Beach, which we skipped on the way back by taking the low-traffic River Road (quiet this time of year). The route offers plenty of beautiful views of the Delaware River, and we’d gladly ride it again. Next time, we plan to continue north from Owens.
