This washing machine is the basic model of Ariston based on the 1972 LB 150 (see video here on my channel • Ariston LB150 anno 1972 Panoramica ) which marks the beginning of a new series of Ariston appliances which broke away from the previous ones especially regarding the aesthetic design. All appliance manufacturers, in those years, began to produce coordinated furnishing appliances. This series of washing machines has a whole series of aesthetic characteristics which then applied to the Ariston brand for many years. A new design appears for the first time with regard to buttons and switches that take on the unmistakable appearance of rounded corners with smooth rounded lines which were then applied to the entire production and soon the standardized knob would also appear, used for the first time on the kitchens and dishwashers. The washing machine is completely detached from the old Ariston production which actually inherited the SanGiorgio design since Merloni's production of Ariston-branded washing machines and dishwashers began only after the acquisition of the SanGiorgio brand in La Spezia. The first Ariston washing machines were basically, bad to say but true, simplified variants and often with lower intrinsic value of the flagship washing machine of SanGiorgio, the Superautomatica SP5N (see the video available here on my channel • San Giorgio Superautomatic 5 Panoramica 30... ). In practice, the external cabinet of the machine was preserved while the mechanics from which the various Biorama 360 ... LS12 etc. were born was completely upset. This series of washing machines are the first models built by applying some first Ariston standards. As already mentioned, Ariston first of all focused on the aesthetic design while for the rest the machine mounts what was later a proof of definition of the Ariston standard, the simplified Holzer timer, the porthole gasket in silicone rubber, which however had a short life to return to the old gray / blue rubber gaskets certainly less resistant but cheaper to produce, centrifuge between 400 and 500 rpm depending on the version. The Ariston brand was to be the new appliance of the future with a medium price but beautiful to look at and of good quality, completely separate from the design point of view from the rest of the Merloni production of which the Indesit brand was relegated to low-end appliances while the San Giorgio brand was designated for high-end appliances. Ariston appliances were first of all beautiful to look at, the washing machines had an independent drain pump, could perform delicate cycles without spinning (for most Indesits this was impossible), they had larger baskets and higher spin speeds. It might seem that the basket is that of the subsequent Margherita model but this is only partially true for the aesthetics, in reality the sealing and support system of the two series are completely different: this series still mounts sealing rings in standard format, the same ones that are still used today for the most varied applications, from washing machines to car engines, while in the subsequent series a sealing system was developed, with a single Ariston standard, at very low cost, to protect the bearings from water infiltration ... system that over the years has shown considerable limits, after all it was immediately evident to the technicians the will of the manufacturer who preferred to produce household appliances with a programmed duration lower than the standard of the time. Very few Ariston Margherita or Quadrifoglio have survived 10 years of life unscathed under normal conditions of use. Let's say that this video was the first and last Ariston series with "character" from a technical point of view before the transition to the standard of which the progenitor was the "monster" Margherita Ariston who sold a lot thanks to an attractive design and a masterful advertising that made it an icon: the washing machine with a woman's name that ideally made her the friend in the house! In reality she was a very demanding friend, she was certainly not one made to last long in the hands of sloppy and heavy-handed users! Let's say that it was more suitable for those who followed the instructions to the letter, for those who cleaned and dried every little dripping in a maniacal way before, after and during use and who would rarely have used programs at the maximum temperature. The LB120 in the video has 400rpm spin dry 12 programs and being a basic model do not have the satin aluminum dashboard or wooden finishing top, there is no switch for the spin dry cycle exclusion and the see through porthole is made of Plexyglass instead of being made of glass. Despite being a basic model the LB120 is a good machine, made much better than any nowadays Ariston, it washes very well and even if not the best for its time it was a machine still made to be dependable and last … no doubt!
