Pain management is a key responsibility for nurses, and as a nursing student, it’s important to identify different types of pain and know how to assess it effectively. Types of Pain 1️⃣ Acute Pain → Temporary (1 min - 6 months) → Involves SNS (fight or flight), so vital signs may change → Resolves as tissue heals → Examples: breaking a bone, appendicitis, labor 2️⃣ Chronic Pain → Lasts greater than 6 months → Involves PNS (rest and digest), vital signs may remain normal → Pain is present after tissue has healed Chronic Pain Types: Nociceptive: Caused by damaged tissue Neuropathic: Caused by damaged nerve cells Idiopathic: Cause unknown Pain Assessment (OPQRST) Onset: When did it begin? Provoking factors: What makes it start/stop? Quality: How does it feel (burning, stabbing, etc.)? Radiation: Does it spread anywhere? Severity: How intense (using a pain scale)? Time: How long does it last, is it continuous? ✨ Remember: The patient’s self-report is always the most reliable indicator! Pain is subjective, and every person experiences it differently, so communication is key! 💬 Comment below if you found this helpful! #nursingschool #nursingstudent #painmanagement
