Work: Scherzo in Eb Major WoO 4 by Aleksandr Scriabin Performed by: PianoExplained Instrument: Yamaha P125 Digital Piano Aleksandr Nikolayevich Scriabin (1871 - 1915) was a Russian composer and pianist who wrote almost exclusively pieces for the orchestra and solo piano. Showing immense talent on the piano and in composition since a young age, Scriabin was characterized by his strong personality and desire to compose only what he liked without succumbing to academic and social pressure. Scriabin's development of style can be divided into 3 periods: early (until 1903, which, being an admirer of Chopin's music, largely follows conventions of the Romantic era), middle (1903 - 1907, which features much chromaticity, dissonance, unresolved chords), and late (1907 - 1915, where tonality is all but dissolved and his music displayed much flexibility and freedom of constraints). Scherzo in E-flat Major WoO 4 was written in 1886, when Scriabin was only 13. Employing the structure of a Scherzo and Trio, this piece takes the rounded ternary form (ABA), starting and ending with the Scherzo, with the Trio section in the middle. Each of the section also takes the rounded ternary form, so the structure of the entire piece looks like this: (ABA | CDC | ABA). One thing that is immediately apparent upon first listen is that despite the presence of certain modern elements (chromaticity, for example), as a whole, this piece sounds more Classical in nature than Romantic. This is perhaps traceable through diving into history a little more deeply: toward the mid- to late-Classical era, the whimsical, jolly, and light-hearted Scherzo and Trio became a more flexible substitution to the more stately and regal Minuet and Trio. Beethoven famously used the Scherzo and Trio form in a few of his Sonatas to break the seriousness and lighten up the mood. Chopin, who took much inspiration from Beethoven's music, expanded on the form and composed a few standalone Scherzos himself. Scriabin, whose early works were heavily influenced by Chopin, probably was trying to learn from straight from the source and went to explore and analyze Beethoven's Scherzo and Trios, as the melodic pattern and overall atmosphere greatly resemble Beethoven's 3rd movement - Scherzo and Trio - in Sonata No.2 in A Major. This similarity makes Scriabin's Scherzo and Trio in E-flat Major diverge from Chopin's Romantic influence and lean toward the Classical style. ______________________ Follow me on Instagram where I post uncommonly performed classical piano music: / pianoexplained
