Although AI has changed how we send and receive messages, human communication plays a more important role in fostering authenticity and impact than ever before. While AI tools can make work faster, they also bring up questions about ethics and human connection. This panel will discuss, using alumni experiences as examples, when AI enhances communication and when it can reduce the empathy and authenticity that make messages meaningful. This panel highlights specific CCU alumni and shows how they balance technological advances with genuine human communication in their current positions. Alumni in various areas of communication (i.e., health communication, public relations, media, journalism, and organizational communication) will be discussed, as well as alumni who are in graduate school. By sharing the experiences of our graduates, this panel connects to the Humanities at Work theme, showing how alumni use empathy, ethics, and critical thinking. Students studying humanities at CCU may question when they should and should not use AI in their classes, and they will be faced with questions about AI’s utility in their future careers. The perspectives of faculty panelists and of students who have graduated before them will provide insight and may allow for personal reflection. This panel includes the following members of the Department of Communication, Media, & Culture: Dr. Chrissy Selby, Professor & Chair; Dr. Andrea Bergstrom, Associate Professor & Associate Chair; and Dr. Kyle Holody, Professor & Director of Professional Development.
