The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in October 1962 and was a 13-day confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The crisis began when the U.S. discovered that the Soviet Union was secretly installing nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from Florida. The discovery was made through American U-2 spy plane photographs. President John F. Kennedy responded by announcing a naval “quarantine” (blockade) around Cuba to prevent further missile deliveries. The United States demanded the removal of the missiles, while Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev initially resisted. For nearly two weeks, the world stood on the brink of nuclear war. Tensions were extremely high, and both sides prepared military forces. The crisis ended on October 28, 1962, when the Soviet Union agreed to remove its missiles from Cuba. In return, the United States publicly pledged not to invade Cuba and secretly agreed to remove American missiles from Turkey. The Cuban Missile Crisis is widely considered the closest the world has ever come to a full-scale nuclear war. Lyrics: October, 1962. U.S. reconnaissance flights discover Soviet nuclear missile sites in Cuba. Ninety miles from American shores. For thirteen days, the world stood on the edge of nuclear war. One miscalculation. One order. One launch. Humanity held its breath. Photographs in black and white Missiles framed in morning light Warheads silent, cold and still Waiting on a distant will Blockade drawn across the sea Ships approach uncertainty Submarines beneath the tide Depth charges echo far and wide DEFCON rising, tension high Eyes locked across the sky Words exchanged but trust is thin History closing in Thirteen days the line was thin Between the fire and what has been One command could light the flame No one wins a nuclear game Thirteen days the world stood still Under human hands and will Steel and silence face to face Time itself slowed down in space Letters sent in coded tone Private calls on secure phone Khrushchev waiting, Kennedy Two men hold humanity Generals pushing, tempers rise Fighter jets patrol the skies In the depths a captain waits With a choice that seals the fates Orders whispered through the chain Fear disguised as calm and sane Every second, every breath Balanced on the edge of death Thirteen days the trigger near Fueled by pride and fueled by fear Missile keys within the hand Moments none could truly plan Thirteen days the silence loud Underneath the mushroom cloud History could end that fall And no one left to tell it all No sirens sounded in the night No cities burned in blinding light The deal was struck, the ships turned back The world stepped off the final track Thirteen days remember well How close we came to living hell Not by fate and not by chance But fragile human circumstance Thirteen days we stood on the brink Closer than we dare to think From the silence lessons grow How near we were and didn’t know The Cuban Missile Crisis lasted from October 16th to October 28th, 1962. The Soviet Union agreed to remove its missiles from Cuba. The United States agreed to remove missiles from Turkey. No nuclear weapons were launched. But the world has never forgotten how close it came.
